Fathers day

My father left when I was 18 months old.  Father's Day has always been a difficult day, not necessarily outright, but always in the background of the day.  There will forever be a void there, but a void that was minimized by some incredible people throughout my life, so I share this post every year on Father’s day because these people have mattered and made a difference in my upbringing, despite not having a Father to celebrate on this day, so I celebrate them.

For my mother, who was faced with excruciating circumstances at the tender age of 23.  She pressed on without any assistance & provided an incredible life for me in one of the best cities in the world, Detroit, she worked hard to send me to some of the best schools. Happy Father's Day to you, Mom, for doing the work of two.

For my grandfather, Nicholas, who taught me the value of hard work and being there for family.  He also taught me respect and used to sing "Tell Laura I love her".  He valued me and saw something in me that only a male figure can.  He used to sit me on his lap and tell me how special I was.  He was one of my favorite humans!  He also taught me that even on hard days, a handful of roasted peanuts, or a Kit Kat bar, or a shot of Creme de Menthe could surely make the day better.  Oh how I loved seeing you walk through the door from work in your hat, trench coat and a smile.  I only had 13 years with you but you had a tremendous impact on me & I miss you so much.

For my Uncle Joe, who is only 9 years my senior, who used to play with me before bath (I have the pictures to prove this).  I have witnessed him grow into an incredible man & father himself.  I'm so grateful for the memories of watching you play pool in the basement while listening to The Rolling Stones or "Rock Me Tonite" by Billy Squier, watching you build model planes, and you took me under your wing as we got older, even when I need to call you for advice.  You didn't hesitate.  I'm grateful for your example of a man who takes care of his family with respect and dignity.  I appreciate your example more than you know!  It never goes unnoticed.

Thank you to my Aunt Julie and Uncle Peter for being a radiant example of a steadfast love & marriage at the helm of an incredible family and what it means to stick together, run a booming business, all while thanklessly catering to all of those around you, opening your home, and feeding the masses, because that's what Italians do, with lots of hand gestures and laughter!

It's a difficult day, but it's also an amazing day where I have the privilege of looking back at my village that raised me.  A part of each of you lives inside of me and I'm eternally grateful to each one of you, more than words can say.  I'm the lucky one.

Happy Family Day to my incredible family! Happy Father’s Day to all of the incredible fathers out there. If you have one or have had one, you are blessed beyond measure.

Be well x Laura
