How to Make a Decision
My rule of thumb when making a decision is “if you don’t know what to do do nothing until you know for sure,” but that logic wasn’t going to work as I stared into my children’s eyes the morning we were leaving for Six Flags over Georgia.
As they were eating their breakfast and I listened to them debate with each other about which rides scared them the most, I shared this:
If you’re scared and you want to ride, then absolutely go for it.
If you’re scared and you don’t feel like you want to ride, then skip it this time.
I continued that there will be moments in life when we feel the fear, but we’re looking forward to something, and that’s when you know it’s important to do it scared anyway. However, if there is a feeling inside of uncertainty mixed with the fear, then it’s probably prudent to wait until the fear is mixed with surety.
As we went along in the day, they used these self-inquiries as a gauge to check in with themselves. To say everyone had a great time is a bit of an understatement!
Six Flags, we will be back, and next time maybe we’ll each be a little more fearless in our decision-making.
